GECHS Campus Spotlight: Mrs. Maria Sepulveda is a custodian at GECHS. She has been working with LISD for 25 years. Mrs. Sepulveda worked her first three years as a part-time cafeteria staff at Kawas Elem. before becoming a custodian. She has worked at GECHS for most of her 25 years. Mrs. Sepulveda says that being a custodian can be a lot of work, but keeping a clean and safe environment for all students, faculty, and staff is satisfying. Being a custodian also helps her stay active and interact with everyone. #PhoenixPride

GECHS seniors attended an Early College Fair at Heights Elementary School. They shared their experiences taking dual enrollment courses at TAMIU with the elementary students. Our students provided them with insight into their college majors and future careers. This was a great opportunity to show the elementary students how to start their journey toward educational success. #PhoenixPride











GECHS’s seniors are starting to receive their university acceptance letters. Mía Ramírez was accepted to St. Mary’s University and Joyce Guizar was accepted to University of Houston. We are so proud of their collegiate achievements. #PhoenixPride



It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at LISD! LISD welcomed the holiday season with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony along with live performances by school cheerleaders, dance teams, bands, choir, and of course Santa Claus made a special appearance for the children..

Garcia Early College Superintendent Advisory Council had a meeting today. Afterward, the students went to Sanchez-Ochoa, Ligarde, and D.D. Hachar Elementary and read to students. #LISD/PhoenixPride

STARN College Fair
11th and 12th grade students visited with representatives from 15 colleges across Texas. This was a great opportunity for seniors to speak to representatives and submit transcripts and for our juniors to start exploring college opportunities.

Do you know Ms. Marla Carrillo Alaniz?
GECHS Campus Spotlight: Marla Carrillo Alaniz serves as the Hector J Garcia Early College High School Counselor for grades 9-12. This is her 14th year as a high school counselor and her 4th year with LISD. She earned a bachelors degree in Communication Arts from the University of the Incarnate Word and a Masters of Science degree in School Counseling from Texas A&M International University. Ms. Alaniz enjoys assisting students navigate from high school to college. She is happy to witness them achieve their academic and personal goals while cultivating their leadership skills. One of the most rewarding aspects of her work is the opportunity to make a positive impact on the students’ lives and future endeavors. #PhoenixPride

Do you know Mrs. Lorena Madriaga?
GECHS Campus Spotlight: Lorena Madriaga is a Science teacher at Garcia Early College High School. She has been in LISD for 30 years. She teaches Principles of Technology-Physics and Anatomy and Physiology. She is also the UIL Science coach. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Centro Escolar University in the Philippines. She earned her Master’s degree in Psychology and Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M International University. She believes in motivating her students not only to do well in the classroom but also to be involved in their community. She encourages her students to be altruistic and to lend a hand to those who are in need. She loves teaching at the Garcia Early College High School because it is a small community of learners who are driven and highly motivated. #PhoenixPride
